“But You Speak So Well…”

Isn’t this the truth. I have mostly gone voice off in public, and it makes life so much easier for me. I voice at work… because i have to, but most of the time, voice off!

  1. Thank you for sharing my blog. I suspect that Don’s video really “speaks” for many of us oral Deafies who can use our voices. Sometimes it just ain’t worth it.

    • Oh yes, very much so. Its amazing the comments I get… its amazing how people don’t understand you don’t have to be smart to be able to talk… I know plenty of people with nothing intelligent to say who can speak… the content of our words should be examined, not how we say them. Your blog was beautifully written.

  2. As a late-deafened adult, I tend to speak very loud. People remark, “Oh, I can understand everything you say.” They also remark on how clearly my three children speak. What people don’t always realize is how distorted my voice sounds to me.

Thank you for your informative blog. I enjoy your posts.

  3. This explains very well what I was just touching on today. More and more I find it easier to go voice off in public, because people don’t believe that I’m deaf, or assume that I can understand more than I can, or comment that I’m too loud or too quiet. With my new hearing aids I can sometimes hear my own voice now, but it’s hard for me to tell how loud I am compared to surrounding noise I don’t really hear. It makes speaking in public challenging on many levels. Thanks for sharing this post, DeafGirl!
